Out Now!During 1942, the Italian Army considered mounting the 10.5cm gun on the chassis of a P40 medium tank. However, delays with the P40 forced designers in a new direction and an alternate chassis based on the M15/42 was developed. By the end of 1943, a number of Semovente 105/25 were in service in the German Army. They saw action with the 336. Infanterie Division and the 26. Army: GermanPeriod: Mid War, Late WarEven before they had entered the war in 1940, the Italian army recognised that it would need a new, heavier tank to keep up with foreign designs. At 26 tonnes, the new tank was planned to be twice as heavy as the M13/40 medium tank about to enter service. Faced with numerous specification changes and no suitable engine, Fiat Ansaldo, the company that designed all Italian tanks, took until late 1942 to complete the prototype. In Flames of WarDespite its heavy tank label, the P40 is a conventional medium tank. Its 50mm-thick armour and 75mm gun match that of other participants and far outstrips the 30mm armour and 47mm guns of the older Italian medium tanks. With its powerful new motor, it is considerably faster as well.In German ServiceWhen Italy surrendered, the Germans seized the P40 heavy tanks and ordered another 75. Due to the engine shortage, half of the total were to be delivered without engines. These were mounted in the Gothic Line as bunkers in 1944. The rest were issued to the SS for anti-partisan work. Army: ItalianPeriod: Mid War, Late WarMM14 Semovente 75/34 SP Gun, Four Semovente and one Carro CommandoThe Semovente 75/34 was an improved design of the M41 75/18, armed with a new 75/34 gun in a lengthened fighting compartment. Being based on the M15/42 hull, it had a more powerful engine, but was slightly longer. The design was completed by late 1942 and Fiat Ansaldo began full-scale production in 1943. They had produced 190 by September 1943 when Italy surrendered. The semoventi are part of the artillery arm, the elite of the Italian Royal Army. Despite the small crew, the excellent range-finding capabilities of the Carro Comando combined with their artillery training enable them to score far more hits than their enemies would expect. The artillery crews of the semoventi are deadly accurate, even with their short-barrelled guns. More...
