Begleit Assault Platoon

The 189. Sturmgeshütz-abteilung was the first StuG assault gun unit to receive dedicated Begleit, or escort, troops. These tank riders were first assigned to the batterie for the Battle of Kursk, armed with rifles and submachine-guns. In the summer of 1944 the new Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle began making appearances among the troops.

The Begleit soldiers’ job was to protect the vulnerable assault guns from infantry assaults. They would sweep enemy positions, clearing anti-tank positions or scouting ahead of their gun. When a threat was spotted, they would deal with it swiftly, allowing the assault gun to focus on mnore serious threats. This deadly combination proved successful and escort troops become common amongst the other assault gun units.

While the Blitzkrieg days are gone, the role of the SS-Panzergrenadier has not diminished in late war. No one is better than the Gepanzerte SS-Panzergrenadier Platoon at assaults. Whether they must break through the enemy lines, retake lost ground, or capture the objective, the armoured Panzergrenadiers will do the job.

Inside you will find all that you need to field the infantry teams for either an Gepanzerte SS-Panzergrenadier Platoon or a motorised SS-Panzergrenadier Platoon from Cobra. You get six 4-man MG teams and 3-man Command MG team.

As additional options Panzerfaust anti-tank rockets have been included to upgrade the Command to a Command Panzerfaust SMG team and one MG team to a Panzerfaust SMG team.

For the armoured (Gepanerte) option just add three GE241 Sd Kfz 251/1 D half-tracks.

The 8cm mortar has been a great asset to the infantry over the past few years. The small, portable weapons are able to place enough fire over the heads of the enemy to keep them pinned in their holes.

This new pack features SS crew in SS-camouflage smocks to supplement the packs already available with the GE725 with Heer crew and GE765 with Fallschirmjäger crew.

This pack contains six 8cm GW34 mortars, 18 crew, three command, and six observer miniatures, and six medium and four small bases, ready for ground mounting.

78th Sturm Pioneer Platoon

Army Group Centre had plenty of time to prepare for the Soviet assault in the summer of 1944. Across the front German infantry divisions dug-in using trench works, minefields, barbed wire, anti-tank obstacles and such.

The industrious pioneers did the majority of the work as they set about sighting gun pits and interlocking fields of fire to stem in the inevitable tide.

The defensive works were many layers deep connected by communication trenches. Wire and mines were used to slow the advance and thin out the Soviet troops as they closed with the trenches. The pioneers also fortified towns into a series of “Festerplatz” by digging anti-tank ditches into the streets, setting booby-traps and reinforcing buildings into bunkers.

Once the preparations were complete, the pioneers settled into their positions to await the enemy with piles of tank-hunting equipment, flame-throwers and Goliath demolition carriers.
