Fortress Europe contains the core forces that were in Festung Europa, but they have been given the modern equivalent of a makeover to bring them to that same standard as our current books.

The first major change is the organisation diagrams for choosing your company have been changed to the new style.

The second major change is the addition of new units that have appeared in all the handbooks from the last two years in their relative places. Now all the forces can use the new equipment, not just the divisions covered in the handbooks.

The last major difference is that we have updated the Soviet section to bring it in line with the Eastern front books.

The book has new photographs, styles and layouts, making this a real step forward from Festung Europa visually as well as content wise.

Fortress Europe is a 160 page full colour book and is the same price as Festung Europa. It does not replace Festung Europa, but updates the lists within it. The forces in Festung Europa can still be fielded as valid Flames Of War forces so you are not forced to change anything should you not want to. It is simply a matter of making clear which book your force is from as it is either one or the other.

The Complete Intelligence Handbook for Forces in
North Africa and the Mediterranean, 1942-1943

North Africa and the Mediterranean is a 264-page hardback book containing revised and updated briefings for the major Axis and Allied forces that battled for dominance across North Africa and Italy.

North Africa and the Mediterranean provides Flames Of War players the forces needed to recreate the battles between the Allied and Axis forces across North Africa, through Tunisia, and onto Sicily and the Italian mainland.

Start with the British Eighth Army against Rommel and the Afrikakorps. Fight the battles of Gazala and Bir Hacheim. Continue on to the borders of Egypt and then fight once more across the northern shores of Africa. Fall back and defend Tunisia then counterattack and blacken the ground at Kasserine. Introduce the Tiger tank to the Allies and give the upstart Americans and veteran Tommies a taste of the German big cats and what awaits them in Europe.

Eastern Front is a major revamp of Ostfront. It brings the old books up to the latest standards with the new company organisation diagrams, complete listings rather than modifications for variants, and better overall organisation. It has also undergone a comprehensive re-pointing to bring all of the forces into line and incorporate the last four years of experience.

The German section is both essentially the same, and quite different. While it covers the same material, it does so in a much more complete and easy-to-use fashion.

As anyone who reads the forums will know, the Finnish lobby is alive and well, and definitely keen to be heard! It is no surprise then that they have new special rules for their artillery and the Hunters rule replaces the Ski-equipped rule bringing them in line with their new late-war briefing.

Like the Italians in North Africa, the Eastern Front Italians have had quite a revamp. The basic force is now a battalion rather than a company. This gives them a lot more resilience and makes a balance force much easier to develop given their cheap infantry and generally light equipment. As a battalion, they have a bit more support and quite a lot more anti-tank guns!

The Romanians also get the battalion-sized force treatment for their foot-slogging infantry. This makes them more resilient, and gives them access to a bit more support including more anti-tank guns, regimental pioneers, more artillery and heaps of machine-guns!

There are lots of cool changes for the Soviet forces as they are brought them into line with the Bagration series of books. In general they benefit immensely from the points reduction in the cost of Fearless tanks and guns, while also benefiting from better discounts for large tank and artillery units.

The Battle For Omaha Beach
D-DAY, 6 JUNE 1944

By the beginning of June 1944, the beaches of the tranquil French coast of Normandy had been transformed by the occupying German army into something not nearly so picturesque. A dozen bunker complexes dotted the high bluffs overlooking the five kilometre-long crescent of sand between Vierville-sur-Mer and Colleville-sur-Mer, littered with obstacles designed to punch holes in any landing craft willing to brave them.

At each end, forbidding cliffs lined the waters edge, making an assault there impossible.

Four draws sliced through the forbidding bluffs. These were the only way off the beach for vehicles, and the most heavily fortified points. The most important of the draws were the two to the east called D1 and D3 by the Allies, as both had roads winding up from the beach heading inland.

The beach the Allies codenamed Omaha had become the outer wall of Hitler's Fortress Europe.

INSIDE YOU WILL FIND:

- History of the battle for Omaha beach.

- History and complete organisation of the German 352. Infanteriedivision

- Options to field a Festungskompanie from 726. Grenadierregiment,
Kampfgruppe Meyer and 1352. Stug Abteilung.

- Rules for fielding beach defences as part of your Festungskompanie.

- History and complete organisation of the US 1st "Big Red One" and
US 29th "Blue and Grey" Infantry Divisions.

- History and complete organisation of the US Rangers at Point du Hoc.

- Exploits of General Norman "Dutch" Cota, Assistant Divisional Commander
of the 29th Infantry Division.

- Two new scenarios; The battle for easy Green and Point du Hoc.

Quote from Battlefront's Design Notes:
"As a Design Studio we knew that we had to write an intelligence briefing for the Rommel’s 21. Panzerdivision, even if we were to do nothing else with Normandy. We also knew that the Canadian forces needed to be addressed. Thus was born the next book of the Normandy Campaign, a book that would address both of these forces and the unique equipment that they used. In Monty’s Meatgrinder we cover these two forces from the D-Day invasion through to the fall of Caen. In these battles the Canadians and the 21. Panzerdivision came to blows many times on the field of battle, earning each the mutual respect of the other."

This is the last of Battlefront's Normandy themed Battle Books. We take a brief look at what will be inside.

After weeks of battling through impenetrable hedgerows for a few yards of French soil, the US Army has broken out of the beachhead. Operation Cobra has cracked the German front lines. The veteran 2nd ‘Hell On Wheels’ Armored Division smashes through German divisions still flattened by the bombing. Beside them the 3rd ‘Spearhead’ Armored Division races into the disorganized rear of broken German formations. Everywhere American task forces roll down roads, opposition crumbling before them.
However, not all of the Germans are done with fighting. As the Americans begin to encircle German forces cut off in the Roncey Pocket, the hardened 2. ‘Das Reich’ SS-Panzerdivision strikes south, breaking free of the trap. The two forces clash in the dark, each struggling to accomplish their mission and deny the other side victory. When morning light comes, both sides now know that the fight has only just begun, neither willing to relinquish the field of battle to the other.

These highly mobile corps launched through gaps created in the Germans lines and immediately rushed deep into German held territory heading directly for Minsk and its lines of supply.

Highlighting the northern and southern spearheads (the Hammer and Sickle) and their associated corps brings some interesting tank and equipment options.

£13.50 / €16.20

Army: British, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian, Soviet, United States
Period: Early War
Book Type: Rulebook

Flames Of War allows you to take on the role of a field commander manoeuvring your troops across the battlefields of World War II, bringing this classic period of warfare to life in your own games room. With Mid-war Monsters you can test out the experimental super tanks of 1942 and 1943 to see how they would have performed if they had made it into production.

Massive 100-ton super tanks, nearly impenetrable light tanks, incredibly powerful tank-hunters, heavy armoured cars, and vastly-improved medium tanks.

These are some of the projects that the scientists and engineers of Great Britain, The United States, Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union laboured towards in 1942 and 1943. Some designs were combat tested, while others never got past the prototype stage, but what if they had seen widespread service? How good would they have been?

Inside You Will Find:

- Three British monsters ranging from the TOG2*, a throwback to the First World War armed with a 17 pdr gun, to the Boarhound armoured car, which weighs as much as a Sherman tank.
- The Anglo-American T14 assault tank.
- Three US monsters: the M6 heavy tank, America’s answer to the Tiger, the M27 designed to replace the Sherman, and the 8-wheeled T55 tank destroyer.
- Five German monsters including Porsche’s version of the Tiger tank, the Panzer I F light tank with Tiger-like armour, the Dicker Max, Sturer Emil, and 8.8cm FlaK18 Sfl tank-hunters.
- Two Italian monsters: the P40 heavy tank that was nearly a match for a Sherman tank, and the improved Semovente 75/34.
- Four Soviet monsters with the new T-43 medium tank and three heavy tanks ranging from the 100-ton KV-5 down to the comparatively light 43-ton IS-85
